Emma is my favourite Jane Austen book. I know that it is often not liked as much by Austen-fans, but Jane Austen herself actually predicted that before writing the novel. She said: “I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.“
Well, let me tell you, I LOVE Emma. So of course I got super excited when this new movie adaptation by Autumn de Wilde was announced. Other adaptations never seemed to do my favourite Austen heroine justice (sorry, I really don’t like Clueless, don’t @ me), but the trailer for EMMA. (2020) looked more than promising. I couldn’t wait for it to be released in cinemas and I was about to finally go see it when lockdown came and all movie theatres closed. I was (and I am not exaggerating here) DEVASTATED. Especially when the DVD release was still set for December and I thought I had to wait until the end of the year. However, the DVD was released earlier than originally planned and when it finally arrived at my door step a few weeks ago, I almost cried of happiness.

***Small Spoilers Ahead***

This movie is everything I was expecting and then some. The casting is exquisite, Anya Taylor-Joy is just as “handsome, clever and rich“ as Emma is supposed to be, but also sexy and cheeky in a way that sweeps me off my feet. Johnny Flynn’s Mr. Knightley is heartfelt, romantic and exactly the voice of reason Emma needs to stay grounded. We also get to see him fully naked in his first scene and later on have the most dramatic breakdown in period piece film history (such a mood). Bill Nighy portrays Mr. Woodhouse perfectly, Mia Goth is the most adorable Harriet and Josh O’Connor is such a funny Mr. Elton, he almost turns him into a likeable character. The list goes on…
Another thing I love about this movie is its aesthetics. The brightly coloured wallpapers, the cheerful colours of the costumes and the whole setting is so well put together and arranged that this period piece appears more timely than any other. Seeing Emma in a bright yellow or deep blue outfits, and seeing Harriet and her fellow school girls march the streets in bright red coats, is simply refreshing. The soundtrack fits everything that is happening on screen perfectly and is more than well put together. Pairing the 19th century setting with such subtile modern aspects makes this story and film truly timeless.

I have watched EMMA. multiple times since I got the DVD and I am still in awe of how well this adaptation is executed. I can only highly praise Autumn de Wilde and the whole team/crew behind this movie. THANK YOU, for managing to make this beautiful film.
I am here for the typical hand-holding and ballroom scenes that we all love since at least Pride & Prejudice (2005), which I am equally obsessed with. Worth mentioning is also, how often we see amazing close ups of the characters and how Anya Taylor-Joy looks directly at the viewer from time to time. That playful looks just emphasise this very particular naughtiness in Emma that I simply love.
We get non-verbal comedy, funny dialogues, beautiful scenery, teaching moments, drama, romance, secret (and hot!) kisses and even a dramatic nosebleed.
I just cannot stress enough how excited I am about this Austen adaptation and how amazing it turned out. Emma might not be the most likeable Austen creation, indeed, but she surely is the one with the most character development, while not being the sole heroine of her story. As Anya Taylor-Joy said in an interview: “I think it is so much more rewarding, watching someone whose flaws you are aware of […] And I also think that while people may like to say that they don’t enjoy watching Emma behave badly, they enjoy watching Emma behave badly.“

I promise you, you will indeed enjoy this film.
